Algae news

 AI‑guided algal biofuel production
Researchers at Texas A&M have used an AI model to optimize outdoor algal growth in semi‑continuous cultivation, reaching a world-record productivity of ~43.3 g biomass/m²/day—nearly double the U.S. Department of Energy’s target of 25 g/m²/day—while also using engineered algae to enable low-cost harvesting via sedimentation

Algae-based phosphate-removing adsorbents
At Florida Atlantic University, researchers turned cyanobacterial biomass (from harmful blooms) into activated-carbon adsorbents modified with lanthanum or zinc, capable of removing > 99 % of phosphorus in water within minutes—offering a scalable tool to prevent harmful algal blooms

Macro‑algal wastewater treatment facility
In Queensland, Australia, an $8.3 M algae-powered water treatment plant opened using sunlight, macroalgae, and seaweed instead of chemicals. It's 5× cheaper than conventional systems and produces by-products like liquid fertilizer and paper—now scaling toward full capacity in mid‑2025.

  • Algae-based building materials
Australia is progressing toward using microalgae and seaweed to produce carbon-absorbing, biodegradable construction components—3D‑printed algae bricks and seaweed/oyster shell composites—that could replace cement-based materials in sustainable architecture The Guardian.

  • Ocean algae that cool the Earth
New research reveals that bloom-forming Pelagophyceae algae produce high levels of DMSP—a compound that fuels climate-cooling DMS gas emissions—showing their role in Earth’s natural thermoregulation is larger than previously thought the-microbiologist.com+4Ocean News & Technology+4ScienceDaily+4.

🎭 Creative & Cultural Innovation

  • Bioluminescent algae fashion
Dutch designer Iris van Herpen debuted a living dress made of 125 million bioluminescent algae (Pyrocystis lunula), which glows in response to movement and environment. The garment is a fusion of science, art, and sustainability—symbolizing ecological stewardship in couture the-microbiologist.com+2vogue.com+2News-Medical+2.

⚠️ Environmental Alerts

  • Toxic algal bloom crisis in South Australia
A massive bloom spanning ~4,500 km² is responsible for the deaths of nearly 13,000 marine animals across ~400 species. Experts warn of long-term ecosystem collapse and call for federal intervention as this bloom persists into summer with no sign of abating the-microbiologist.com+4The Guardian+4adelaidenow.com.au+4.
